Tiptastic Tuesday: Establishing Patient Financial Responsibilities

The health reform continues to change the insurance landscape with patients carrying greater financial responsibility for their care. Unfortunately, not all patients understand their financial obligations which sometimes leaves practices no choice but to hound patients for payment, or risk giving up revenue.

In order to facilitate getting payments from your patients, connect them to resources that educate them about plan details. This way, they understand what portion of bills they should pay. Other recommendations to help patients pay their bill include:

  • Establishing financial expectations early about when patients will pay and how much. We recommend giving them an estimate early on during pre-service calls or during appointment reminders.
  • Providing online options for bill payments. Leverage technology to help your patients pay for services. It’s quicker and more convenient.
  • Stay engaged until final payments. Work with your patients until all debts are settled!
