Kindred Healthcare has successfully acquired Gentiva Health Services to become the fourth-biggest healthcare provider of any type in the country. Boards of both companies approved the $1.8 billion deal, ending Kindred’s five-month hostile takeover bid for the home health provider. Gentiva, one of the largest home health, hospice, and community care service providers in the nation complements Kindred’s “evolution from being primarily a nursing home and acute-care hospital company to a continuum-wide provider of services.” The deal is expected to close during the first quarter of 2015, making Kindred the largest operator of long-term acute care hospitals and inpatient rehabiliation facilities in the country. Kindred hopes to develop an ecosystem that will “help get patients to the right place at the right time, at the lowest cost to the payers.”
