American regulators are helping doctors spot counterfeit and unapproved drugs by raising awareness of illegal operations that sell fake drugs to healthcare providers. Recently, federal prosecutors uncovered companies distributing foreign versions of Botox, fake cancer drugs and other unapproved or contaminated medicines. These operations often entice physicians by faxing “too good to be true” flyers. Next Tuesday, the FDA plans on pushing back with its own educational campaign by faxing flyers to physicians on how to recognize these scams. The FDA recommends doctors to only buy drugs from wholesale distributors licensed in their state.
