Hospital Consolidation & Antitrust Law Concerns Increase

According to Health Affairs, which compiled a list of studies revolving around provider consolidation, large healthcare organizations use market power to maintain high prices without always providing the best quality care. According to one study, private and public-sector initiatives will determine whether “governments will shift from supporting competition to directly regulating payment rates.” Another study found that healthcare regulation distorts prices and alters the nature of products the system buys and sells.

Nonetheless, hospital groups argue that “realignment allows organizations to maintain their community presence by offering more services and preventing closures,” thus, expanding patient access to care.
