CMS Budget for 2015 Requests Additional Funds, Defines Nursing Home Quality Targets

The CMS’ proposed budget for fiscal year 2015 requests an extra $50 million for survey activities; it also lists the agency’s targets for nursing home quality measures. The $424.2 million request is $49 million more than the 2014 allocation. Approximately 91% of the funding would go toward surveys of LTC facilities and home health agencies. According to the budget, survey costs are being increased by CMS’ expanded role in “addressing issues of national importance.” In 2015, CMS is introducing a new quality measure to decrease the percentage of nursing home residents with dementia who are taking antipsychotic medications. Additionally, the budget includes a quality measure aimed at decreasing the prevalence of the pressure ulcers in LTC facilities.
