The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) has released a new set of guidelines for healthcare personnel working in non-operating room settings. Healthcare professionals should consider a “bare below the elbows” (BBE) approach by wearing short-sleeved tops, no wristwatches, no jewelry or ties. Other recommendations include wearing closed-toed shoes with low heels and non-skid soles. Although evidence connecting workers’ attire to the spread of infections is limited, SHEA hopes the guidance will lead to more research in the area.
