The Future Looks Promising for ACOs

There are approximately 500 accountable care organizations (ACOs) across the country and the number is expected to double by the end of 2014, according to a new report.  With a demand for higher quality, cost-effective care, ACO participation is increasing rapidly; since 2012, ACO participation has almost quadrupled and three out of four responding hospitals say they have plans for an ACO model in the upcoming year.  More than 75 percent of hospital executives surveyed in the fall of 2013 said that they have implemented or planned to form an ACO after 2015.  Although the future for ACOs looks extremely promising, progression towards ACOs has been slower than predicted because of two big challenges. These challenges include determining the pace of adoption and establishing payer partnerships necessary to maintain financial stability.
