CMS Extends Meaningful Use Deadline

CMS is extending the meaningful use deadline for Stage 2 and Stage 3. Stage 2 of meaningful use will be extended through 2016, and Stage 3 will begin in 2017 for providers who have completed at least two years in Stage 2. The extension is similar to what CMS did with Stage 1, which was set to last two years but was extended by a year when it appeared that providers were unable to meet the federal payment program’s stricter Stage 2 criteria. The delay is “intended to allow CMS and ONC focus on helping providers meet Stage 2’s demands for patient engagement, interoperability, and information exchange, as well as use data collected during that phase to inform policy decisions for Stage 2.”

Expect the proposed rules to be released in the fall of 2014 for requirements all providers must meet for Stage 3. Stage 2 started on October 1st of this year for those who met Stage 1 criteria for the past two years.  For physicians, Stage 2 will begin on January 1st 2014.
