Physicians Ordering More Post-Acute Care Than Is Needed

According to experts, discharged hospital patients are unnecessarily put in post-acute care settings, getting more expensive care than is needed.  Medical experts, writing in the Harvard Business Reviewbelieve increased research and greater investment is essential in establishing meaningful quality measures to better assess the performance of skilled nursing facilities.  In addition, the HBR column argues that there needs to be a “revamping” of the way Medicare reimburses skilled nursing facilities focusing on replacing the per-diem system with a case-based system, therefore creating better incentives for providers, who are often penalized for discharging residents too soon.
