We’ve all heard about the doctor shortage but it looks like things are starting to slowly change. This year, a record number of students applied to and started medical school. According to statistics from the Association of American Medical Colleges, about 20,000 students in enrolled in 2013, a 2.8 percent increase since last year. It’s speculated that four new medical schools, as well as expanded class sizes contributed to the growth. Interestingly enough, osteopathic medical schools continued to grow with an 11.1 percent growth in enrollment. In order to continue to see growth, congress needs to reach a decision on proposals to increase the Medicare budget to support residency slots.
