Yesterday the House passed a bill to ban subsidies that help Americans buy health insurance until the Department of Health and Human Services can verify that the money is going to only those who are eligible. There have been many efforts by House Republicans to try and delay, defund, repeal, and replace the new health care law since it passed in 2010. Republicans argue that the law doesn’t offer much security against fraud; they also fear people will receive subsidies without any income verification. The Obama administration says that they will be checking eligibility through tax and Social Security records and additional sources when necessary. They also note that the subsidies will be paid directly to insurance companies, decreasing chances of fraud.
