Gov. Daniel P Malloy agrees to meet with Bristol Hospital CEO, Kurt Barwis to discuss for-profit hospitals

Gov. Dannel P Malloy recently vetoed legislation that would have made it easier for Vanguard Health Systems, a Tennessee-based for-profit hospital operator to purchase Bristol and Waterbury hospitals, as well as recently announced plans to acquire Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN). This controversial veto has put all three mergers on hold.

The question remains; should Connecticut allow for-profit hospitals to enter Connecticut to help cash-strapped community hospitals?

  1. Thank you for inquiring! Since the piece of legislation regarding for-profit hospitals has been re-worked and proposed various times, Governor Malloy will certainly have it on his mind. With new regulations and constant changes in the health care industry due to the ACA, it will be tough to say whether or not hospitals can adequately adapt without an alternative support system. Eventually, shifting to a for-profit model may be more beneficial for both the provider and consumer than shutting down shop. What are your thoughts?
