United Kingdom Secretary of Health, Jeremy Hunt remains optimistic in finding drugs that could halt or cure dementia by 2020. The World Health Organization estimates that costs associated with dementia are $604 billion per year affecting 35.6 million people worldwide. In the US, 1 In 3 seniors die with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Studies are showing that drugs already licensed on the market for other conditions may also treat dementia. If successful, treatments could double for dementia within 10 years. As the Alzheimer’s Association predicts that 13.8 million Americans will have Alzheimer’s disease by 2050, finding curable solutions is certainly a priority.
