Arkansas, Colorado, Kentucky, Massachusetts and Minnesota received an additional Level I establishment grant to continue developing their online insurance marketplaces. Connecticut, Maryland, Nevada, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington and the District of Columbia are receiving Level II funding. The states have until November 16 to submit their exchange plans for approval.
The beginning of fall marks the time of year patients begin seeking flu shots in anticipation of the winter months. The American Medical Association (AMA) recently released its mid-year updates to the Category I vaccine codes, many of which relate to the seasonal flu vaccine.
One major change is the addition of code 90672. Released July 1, the code is effective as of January 1, 2013 and will appear in the 2013 CPT codebook. The AMA has also revised several existing CPT code descriptors for the flu vaccine. Intramuscular vaccine codes 90655-90658 and intranasal vaccine code 90660 added trivalent to their descriptors indicating the vaccines provide patients with immunity against three different strains of the flu vaccine.
When the federal government began providing incentives for the use of electronic medical and billing records, the goal was to improve efficiency and patient safety while reducing health care costs. Beginning October 1, all outpatient Medicare therapy service claims must contain the National Provider Identifier (NPI) of the physician responsible for periodically reviewing the therapy plan of care.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has indicated therapy claims that do not contain the NPI will be returned unpaid.
